In February 2002, unbeknownst to most including himself, Dan Segall (aka Sensei aka Chef Dan aka Topcock aka Ron aka Sniper aka That Guy) quietly celebrated his birthday in New York City for what may have been the very last time...

This Thursday night, join us for our usual Thirsty enterprise with an added wrinkle as we countdown to midnight to celebrate :

Segall's Tenth Year in Asia!!!

That's right, 10 consecutive birthdays enjoyed in the East, South East, Far & Near East. And nothing says "Geez chef, you're gettin' old and fat" like

a $10 'dog & a beerlao'

So pack up your toddler & your dignity and once again, hang out on the sidewalk poppin coldies, munchin wieners and makin fun of Segall as he spins tunes and sucks in his gut.

Take in the crisp February air 1'degree north of the equator and enjoy a fine time making new friends because we just don't have enough tables so you're gonna have to share. Come early and help us STEAL TABLES FROM THE BLARNEY! You'll also stand a chance to glimpse

LUCKY DRAW WINNER - Leesa Clift as she deftly tackles $20 worth of suds & sausage on the house.

Stand a chance to win this week by coming down to ZenDog for Thirsty Thursdays @ ZenDog @ The Sail #01-16, 6 Marina Boulevard, The Sail Residences - Tower 2 Singapore Singapore

View Thing to Do Details

View comments on Thing to Do

APSS Bungy Networking Night

Yes, it's official. APSS is scaling great heights and raising our game big time! Now it's time to prove it with the REVERSE BUNGY at Clarke Quay!

We have 4 volunteers so far who are kicking off the Bungy challenge: Nishant Kasibhatla, Andrew Chow, Deborah Torres Patel and Sharon Connolly. Who else will be brave enough to join them?

Andrew Chow is going to do his best to get us some publicity so this becomes a media stunt to promote Raise your Game on 16 February! So Raise your Game speakers in particular, we need you.

Leave your comments and names here if you want to (a) Bungy, or (b) come along to support, network and take photos.

This will certainly be a networking night with a difference!

=====================

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS

JESS LOCKE

Jess Locke plays simple yet infectious songs that could be folk, country, pop, indie and sometimes even punk. Hailing from the Central Coast of NSW and currently based in the heart of Sydney, she has created several collections of songs including an EP, an album of home-recorded demos and, most recently, a split tape/CD with N. Martin. Jess has been writing and playing solo since around 2006 and can now be found playing with her band all over Australia.

VIRGINIA SOOK

Lindsay, also known as Virginia Sook has turned her stripped back acoustic songs into full band arrangements, which brings her on the road for her SE Asia tour with good mate Jess Locke this Feb. Perfect for fans of lovely storytelling and acoustic music.

http://virginiasook.bandcamp.com/

THIS IS ATLANTIS

With a magnificent aptitude for texture and a distinctive blend of both the intricate and organic, Fadzil, Wan G, Sufi and Noor’s chemistry makes them unmistakably This Is Atlantis. Guitar works that complement each other with each own’s unique style, sometimes uniting to deliver strength in a single guitar pattern to give their music trouble free dynamics, edge and that definitively post rock climaxes. Their drummer, quite decisively seems to refuse to give in to the atmospheric soundscapes solely, and chooses to escape by giving those ethereal melodies some little mathy calculative madness. With each member’s unique style, an arguably genuine sound arises.

http://facebook.com/ThisIsAtlantis

PENPUSHER

Penpusher is quite simply a songwriting unit still in the works. Ave Chan, Brian Leery and Thomas Wu meet up with the intention to perform songs that weave observations of everyday thoughts and emotions. They try to express it all as little soliloquys that seek to take the audience into tiny worlds within tiny universes.

Radio Pulze Presents Live Lounge: Rock Out!

Radio Pulze Presents... Live Lounge: Rock Out!

The third installment of Live Lounge brings two no-holds barred hard rock bands, Page and Thambi K Seaow to NUS. Expect heavy riffs, banging drums and a wall of sound for a face-melting good time!

Page is a four-piece rock band fronted by Bani Hidir (of B-Quartet and 53A fame) along with Siraaj Anwar, Elffie Arshad and Irwan Shah. In July 2011, the band released their monster of a single, Arrival which can be found on their Bandcamp page (www.page.bandcamp.com). They followed up with a killer cover of Foo Fighters' "Hey, Johnny Park!" on New Years Eve last year. If you're looking for a local equivalent to the Foo Fighters, Page is your best bet, at least we think so!

Thambi K Seaow describe themselves as a comedic rock band and rightly so, judging by their videos on YouTube. Their hit song, "Sebab Saya Shotgun" gained almost 29,000 hits when it was first released. In 2009, they were featured on CNNgo.com in an article titled, "Who Mattered Most in Singapore 2009". They even packed out Esplanade Outdoor Theatre in April that year! Thambi K Seaow's brand of melding together the different national languages into a composite whole and showing a flair for distinctly Singapore stories is what makes their show so memorable to anyone who has seen them live!

This is a Live Lounge not to be missed! It will be loud, rude and unforgettable! Have a hearty dinner and bring all your friends down to NUS Yusof Ishak House at 8pm, sharp!

(Live Lounge is an initiative by the student deejay society, Radio Pulze, aimed at showcasing the best local bands in the music scene and an accessible platform for the NUS community to experience and embrace local and original musical talent. It is a free-of-charge live concert and it is open to public.) @ NUS Yusof Ishak House

View Thing to Do Details

View comments on Thing to Do

a collective of avant-garde sound designers having a strong influence from arts, cutting-edge technologies + futuristic lifestyle, it is an open-source.

Founded in the late 2010 by a group of avid music devotees : Fakid, Alife, Qastro, Ilohshix + Djizam who have been dwelling in the local music scene since 04 - 05 later on wandered deeper into the underground trails of minimalist music and got enticed by the ominous experimental soundscapes.

Like a scientist in a lab, they have been experimenting with abstract sounds of techno, ambient + IDM, constructed and structured with chaotic sound waves amidst subtle aesthetic pleasures for the mind.

Yes, Stereometa is throwing SMU's very first LADIES NIGHT PARTY!

This will be the schematics of the party:

Everyone will be tagged at the door with light-stick bracelets depending on their current relationship status from these categories:

Red: Attached
Yellow: It's complicated but we all need our off days dont we?
Green: Single

*please note that the bands will be given out based on the discretion of the door hosts. If you seem too flirty to be attached, we will tag you with a green band.

As you can see, we are not discriminating against ANYONE. So come on down! It doesn't matter what gender you prefer or if you're in a relationship or not, we welcome everyone to celebrate the concept of LOVE! It is the time for love to be spread, and certainly, made as we party together to celebrate this year's Valentine's Day, Traffic Light style

So people, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Head down to Forbidden City at Clark Quay on the 9th of Feb and party the night away with cheap drinks, good company and best of all, an awesome blend of hiphop/rnb/house music to shake to.

Rule for the night:

Whatever happens in Forbidden City, will forever be hidden and etched in our memories, never to be spoken off again.

Social featuring Andrew Tang

About Social

It's Ladies Night at Avalon every Thursday, sugar-coated with treats and more! Ladies enter for free, and head to The Powder Room from 10pm - Midnight. Enjoy pampering treats before dancing up a storm to tunes by our very own residents, Andrew Tang and Effen in our Main Room. It's a Social Mix bound for a bang!

*****************************************************************************
About Andrew Tang

"Music is my soul of inspiration, DJing is my creation of a journey and every song means something different to me with a story to tell". The passionate DJ has been helming the decks for a little more than a decade, playing at a number of clubs both locally and regionally like Club Maison in KL and Bed Supperclub in Bangkok.

A runner-up at 2003 Juice DJ Quest, Andrew Tang was described by Juice Magazine as "The peak house set of the night was definitely the segment that got the crowd partying… The contestant with the best technical capabilities produced one of his best ever Progressive House sets… Andrew’s segment had the full-house crowd raving and hungry for more.”

Andrew takes on a residency at Avalon, working the crowd with his infectious big room sounds. Look out for this one as he rocks the dancefloor with his floor fillers.

BLACK COMEDY

Being one of the better known cultural Halls of Residence in NUS, Sheares Hall has been known for her niche in cultural performances, vibrant student culture and her firm emphasis on character and leadership development amongst residents. Cultural activities in Sheares Hall, Sheares Production included, have always been given priority in terms of talents development and manpower allocation.

This coming year, our production has been set on the 10th and 11th of February 2011, Friday and Saturday respectively at 8PM.

The venue for our production is University Cultural Centre Theatre, National University of Singapore.

This year's play is - "Black Comedy"

From the acclaimed playwright of Equus, Sheares Production 2011/2012 brings you yet another play by Peter Shaffer.
Except where the former play was teeming with psychological intellect, Black Comedy instead promises you a night at the theatre clutching your sides from laughing way too hard, and way too much!! :D

A young couple. The girl's stern, military-man-type father. The guy's neurotic best friend, and his mischievous ex-girlfriend who he has been--gasp!-- lying to his current fiancée about. Add to this already-motley mix an uppity old lady who turns batty when drunk, a clueless, happy-go-lucky electrician and a millionaire who is as deaf as a doorpost, and just who knows what could possibly ensue when the lights go out in the way of a blackout, and things go bump in the night at breakneck pace?

Produced by:
Natalie Yap
Natalie Hong
Xavier Chen

Directed by:
Hazel Ho
Gloria Shi
Trevor Lee

Main Cast:
Julfri Kwok as Brian, the poor painter
Felicia Chiu as Carol, Brian's Fiancee
Rahul Ghai as Colonel, Carol's military father
Liang Jiun as Harold, Brian's neurotic best friend and neighbour
Jia Xin Karynne as Ms Fanny Foo, Brian's Neighbour
Debbie Pradinata as Clea, Brian's ex-girlfriend
Ng Li Ting as Electrician

Date: Friday, 10 February 2012 and Saturday, 11 February 2012
Time: 8PM
Venue: University Cultural Centre Theatre, NUS

See you all on 10 and 11 February 2012 ! :D

Steve Gamboa (a.k.a. Stevie G) has been involved with dee jaying, producing, and performing live music for over 2 decades now. He began as a DJ in 1988, spinning hip-hop, rare groove, and funk at various parties in his hometown of Washington, DC, “The Chocolate City.”

In 1995, Stevie became co-founder and resident at the "Cold Rice" weekly party at the Kaffa House in DC. He spun there once a week playing an eclectic mix of rare groove, funk, house, and jungle. He was also resident at this same venue on Fridays under the name, Killa F.M. (Killa From Manila), where he was the opening dub/roots and culture DJ for The Upsetter International dancehall sound system. He was also dancehall legend, Sister Nancy’s (“Bam Bam”) featured DJ when she appeared at Club 5, Washington, DC to perform her hits in June 2004.

For the past 15 plus years, Stevie has been concentrating on his unique sound niche as an eclectic classics and tropicalia DJ. In October 2000, he began as solo resident for his own party called, "Sunday Shoutin,'" at the popular DC nightspot Andalu where he was a resident DJ. Guests at his party included Antonio Ocasio (Tribal Winds, NY); Boo Williams (Diaspora, Chicago); Anderson Soares (Sao Paulo, Brazil); Phil Asher (Restless Soul, UK); Miguel Migs, Rasoul, and Lisa Shaw (Naked Music). Stevie was the main resident at The House of Secrets for over 6 years. This invitation-only weekly party was quite likely THE longest running house party in the world. Located in a DC mansion near historic Howard University, this party was in effect for over 30 years. He once played a private party for Prince at Secrets, where The Artist holds his after-show gatherings whenever in town. He was also the summer resident at M3 Music's Sunday twilight party, "Sunset Soiree Sessions" at Club 5 and has supported many visiting DJs, including Timmy Regisford (Shelter, NY), Matthias ‘Matty’ Heilbronn, Neil Aline (Chez, Standard Hotel), and Alex From Tokyo (Tokyo Black Star, Innervisions). Stevie has supported local house music DJs, Doug Smith (95 North Records) and Pope and Oji (Poji Records) at The Sanctuary, another well-known underground weekly house party, and has also graced the famous 18th Street Lounge (headquarters for DC’s hometown heroes, Thievery Corporation) with his eclectic downtempo sets.

Outside of DC, Stevie has played with Neil Aline (Chez) and Darshan Jesrani (Metro Area) for their NY residencies at APT, and with Adam Goldstone (Nuphonic) at 59 Canal St. in New York. In October 2001 and March 2005, he played gigs in San Francisco and LA as part of the Umoja DJ collective which he is a part of (www.umojahifi.blogspot.com). He also toured Brazil in October 2000, playing in Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Londrina, and Curritiba. In May 2004, he was a guest at The Shelter (the venue, not Club Shelter the party), New York City’s longest running house club (over 15 years) where such legends as Timmy Regisford, Li’l Louis Vega, and Joe Claussell have spun. In March 2005 as the featured DJ for the wrap party for “The Fountain,” a science fiction movie directed by acclaimed indie- director, Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream) at The Mile End Bar in Montreal, Canada. During 2001 and 2002, Stevie completed two separate and very successful tours of Spain where he spun in clubs and bars in Barcelona, Tolosa, Zaragoza, Pamplona, Madrid, Bilbao, Valladolid, Gijon, and Logrono. He also performed at two large music festivals in Mallorca and Jerez de la
Frontera where guests included Thievery Corporation (ESL Records) and Jose Padilla (Cafe Del Mar). During the annual Winter Music Conference in Miami 2002, he was a guest DJ at the Yellow (Paris) / Vinylicious (DC) party ("Just For Friends") and during WMC 2004, he played at the famous Astor Hotel and then again at Rain in South Beach in December 2006.

A Bali resident since May 2005, Stevie has been a DJ at the world-renowned, Ku De Ta bar/restaurant in Bali since 2002 where for the first 3 years he was flown over from the States specifically as an imported high season DJ. He is currently the longest running permanent resident there spinning lunch, sunset, dinner, and late night throughout the year, as well as for specially themed events such as the “Funked Up Fridays” sunset sessions. In August 2005 he started two very successful alternating Thursday classics parties (“Bam Bam” and “Hip Shaker”) at the legendary F Lounge in Seminyak where he specialized in playing roots Reggae and dancehall as well as funk, soul, and underground disco classics to a steady crowd of soulful music fans. The Hip Shaker party won the “Best Weekly Party” Award at the Beat Magazine Awards 2007, a distinction obtained by popular vote. Currently, Stevie is one of a handful of permanent resident DJs at Potato Head Beach Club as well as popular sunset beach venues La Plancha and La Barca. Besides his regular residencies, Stevie also throws 2 very successful and innovative monthly parties: The G-Spot classics party at Chandi restaurant held every first Saturday of the month where he continues to represent the best in “music you forgot you loved” along with DJ compatriot Matt “Golddigger” Hudders, and Disko Afrika at Cozy Beach Bar on Batu Belig Beach which has been drawing huge numbers of fans numbering over 1000 who love to get down to music from Africa and the Afro-Caribbean, without a doubt the very first party of its kind on the island. Stevie also just finished a 2011 high season Sunday residency at Bali’s only beach reggae party, Yagga! held at Crystal Palace on Mertasari Beach.

Around Bali, he has played practically every venue, large and small, on the island including: WooBar at The W Retreat & Spa, Mannekepis, Hu’u Bar, Cocoon (also for their Splash party), Sentosa Villas/Blossom Restaurant, Liquid, Lush Bar, Home Cafe, Backyard Lounge, Ma Jolie, Casa Pasta (Ubud), M Bar Go, Paparazzi, Skandal Discotheque, Syndicate, Hypnotique, Macaroni, Bacio, Klapa, DeeJay Café, Black Dog, Single Fin, The Rock Bar, The Cave, Sol (with Nickodemus and DJ DRM for 2 parties), Harry Juku, Word of Mouth, Blackstar Lounge, Oceans 27, Double Six, and Dreamland Beach; in Jakarta at Public, X-Lounge (Vertigo), Poste, 365 Bar, Hotel Dharmawangsa, Willow (for Quirk It!) and for the openings of nightclub Mezza9 and Otel Lobby restaurant (where he currently holds a monthly residency); Mansion and Maja House in Bandung, M Club in Makassar, at Horizontal Lounge, Gili Trawangan, Lombok, and for 2 boat parties aboard the Pinisi schooner Al Ikaii. As of April 2007, Stevie has been the producer and one of the featured DJ’s for the Ku De Ta sunset radio show “KDT Radio” which broadcasts 2-hour slots 3 days a week on Bali’s only electronic music station, 98.5FM Beat Radio Plus and every Sunday on digital radio in Australia via chill out station, Koffee (www.koffee.com.au).

Guys (including ladies), think it's time for us not to meet during the night-time anymore. So instead of moon-tanning, why not do some sun-tanning? Instead of liver failure due to excessive drinking, why not some skin cancer due to excessive UV? Therefore, let's do an outing @ Sentosa. Tentatively, I have set the day on a Saturday after CNY. If the timing is not convenient for anyone (i.e Beatrice Tan for flying here and there :p), do let me know, so that we can settle for the best timing. Paintball is an adrenaline rushing sport which is safe (statistically reported to have lesser injuries than contact sports!) and suitable for people of different gender and physique. Paintball is a fun activity that helps to enhance self confidence, decision making skills and team building. While many play paintball to have fun, organizations and corporations are finding paintball to be a game which promotes corporate teambuilding, increases camaraderie within the company and enhances employees’ leadership skills. We do customization of activities as well.

A Date with SPD

Hi all!

As a run up to the main Passion for Life, Dance for Charity event on 25 February 2012, the Passion for Life working committee is helping to organise an exciting and meaningful event for dancers and the SPD.

"Sounds fun. What are we hoping to achieve?":
We want to
1. Empower the individuals at SPD, and get them to enjoy music and dance
2. Allow the dancers to get to know some of the people at SPD who will benefit from our participation in Passion for Life, Dance for Charity on the 25 February 2012.

"I'm interested! But what am I supposed to do there?":
You just need to
1. Make friends with the people at SPD,
2. Be very patient and assist the SPD participants when learning the dance,
3. At lunchtime, assist feeding them (if there is a need).

"So, when do I need to let you know by?"
RSVP your interest in participating by 7 February 2012 so that we can arrange the necessary logistics.

NOTE: lunch will be provided for the volunteers as well. But of cos we would be very glad and appreciate it if you would like to contribute money to fund for your own lunch or a little more [:)] Do approach David Liem or Sharon Wok to inform them if you would like to do so. @ The Society For The Physically Disabled

View Thing to Do Details

View comments on Thing to Do

Women look for a quality that has little to do with looks.

Know it from the girls themselves!

Many many more myths will be dispelled!

Ms Genecia Luo of Inqueenz Pte Ltd, the renowned Charisma coach will be gracing the event to talk about charisma and grooming that will amplify that attraction to women

TRANSIENCE

TRANSIENCE
Pedestrian Productions: A Physical Theatre Performance

Every day, we struggle to maintain that delicate balance between our human desire for companionship, and then again, for privacy. Beneath contrived commuication and competition, constant chaos simmers. The individual, wilfully or not, fatigues; degenerates; loses form. Yet when isolated, the being simply cannot function - survival itself, hinges on the intimacy of interaction.

Transience seeks to unravel this complex human need. It will bring to tangible form the increasing sense of isolation which pervades our society. Join the young cast as they explore, through movement, the unspoken and primal want for a connection inherent in all.

MORE ABOUT THE CAST:

Pedestrian Productions sees Theatre as an art form that is dynamic and alive. Rooted in Physical Theatre, this company advocates the belief that this preferred mode of storytelling is easily accessible to all actors and audiences. In ‘Transience’, this cast seeks to ensure that the performance is a collaboration between the actors and the audiences – an observation may be shared but a personal interpretation is encouraged.

SIM Track & Field Annual General Meeting 2012

With the conclusion of the IVP, the current Executive Committee will be officially handing over the club management duties to the newly-appointed Committee of 2012 on the 11th of February 2012; Saturday.

We will also be looking back at the events of 2011 as well as looking ahead to 2012 - the year of the Dragon.

A long year it has been indeed, and some may have grown weary or lost the focus and passion that was present at the start of the year. The AGM is the time to find your true niche in the new year; a springboard to goal-realisation in 2012! Besides focusing on individual resolutions, we seek to realign our club's mission and vision with your own, and likewise, your goals with ours. Eventually seeking a mutual understanding between each individual athlete and the collective team ethos.

The Annual General Meeting will be held at SIM HQ LT 1.11 at 1500 hours (3pm) sharp.
Light refreshments will be provided afterwards.

Attire: Smart Casual w/ Covered shoes. You may also choose to wear any SIM Track & Field tee - previous years editions' are fine too!

[ URGENT ]
Kindly confirm your attendance with us as soon as possible so that we can determine an appropriate venue and amount of food to cater!
Thank you for your help!

[ UPDATES - WATCH THIS SPACE! ]
- Location of the AGM has been confirmed - SIM HQ LT 1.11

Bharata Natyam Arangetram of Menaga Selvarajan

Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest of the classical dance forms in India, it is also known as the fifth Veda. Bharatanatyam, as the name depicts is the combination of – Bhava (expression), Raga (music) and Tala (rhythm). Bharatanatyam is a traditional dance-form for its grace, purity, tenderness and sculpturesque poses.

Arangetram is the debut performance of a student of Bharatanatyam. The word ‘arangetram’, which belongs to Tamil language, is composed of two words; ‘etram’ meaning ‘ascending’ and ‘arangu’ meaning ‘performance stage.’

Arangetram is performed after the completion of the basic training of Bharatanatyam. But, it does not indicate the completion of the training. On the day of the Arangetram, the student offers his/her knowledge of the dance at the feet of the Guru and to Lord Nataraja (Lord Shiva's dancing form). The core part of this ritual is the display of the dance form by the student in front of a specially invited audience.

This is the day, that I've been waiting for almost 2 decades!! My bharata natyam arangetram.

I've been jumping around in the name of dance since the age of 4, but only had the chance to learn classical dance in proper, from the age of 13 under the tutelage of Guru Maalika Girish Panicker in Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society.

Arangetram has always been the DREAM of mine ever since I joined the dancing field. I will always try to go for loads of arangetram performances and shows, amidst my shift work, and always wondered when would it be my turn to be performing on stage... And even till now, I can't believe that I'll be doing my arangetram in 3 weeks time...

I really do hope that you will be able to come down with your family and friends to grace the occasion and to be able to share my dream coming true and happiness along with me and my teacher.

Please do try to be there and give me your utmost support.

You can send me your address so that I can pass you the invitation or you can consider this as your personal invitation too.

Take care and God Bless and hope al goes well...

Your presence is our happiness!!!!! @ Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Campus 3, Lee Foundation Theatre 151 Bencoolen St

View Thing to Do Details

View comments on Thing to Do
